Panorama Point, NE, US Highpoint #26, 1 May 2004

Panorama Point, Nebraska, lies at 5,424 feet MSL and is ranked #20 in elevation among US Highpoints. This would be my 23rd highpoint of 2004. Most folks don’t realize that the Great Plains slope up to the mountains, which is how bone-flat Nebraska can be over a mile high near its border with Colorado.

One thing I remember about this trip was nearly running out of gas before I got there. The highpoint is in a maze of farm fields and I didn’t have directions and was bracketing my way towards it with a mapless GPS device. I finally realized I was going to run out and turned back toward the interstate. On the exit ramp I finally ran out of gas and managed to coast my way through the stop sign and all the way up to the pumps!! That’s as close as it gets!!

A unique feature of this highpoint is the tri-state marker NE/CO/WY which is only about 1/2 mile west and some folks hike it from here.

This photo cracks me up 😉
Teewinot is like “come on, dude”
WY/CO/NE tristate marker
Wyoming, Nebraska, and Colorado tri-state Benchmark.

After this, my next highpoint would be Mount Elbert Colorado
