If you didn’t check out my photos of the absolutely gorgeous Lodge at Mount Magazine, check them out here. The day before I hiked Magazine, I hiked to Driskill Mountain, the Louisiana highpoint.
So after relaxing at the lodge all evening, I woke up to light, warm rain and decided to hike to the highpoint before I checked out and made a mad dash back to Texarkana to catch my flight back to Dallas and then on to Kansas City.
The trailhead to the summit is only a few hundred feet from the lodge, and winds around on a contour which increases the distance to a whopping 0.9 miles, another 20 or so minute hike.

Following checking out, I made a beeline drive 3 1/2 hours back to Texarkana to catch my flight to Kansas City. On the way, I drove through Hot Springs, Arkansas, which I went to with my parents when I was about 5 years old. It’s actually a National Park site, and one helluva tourist trap. The rain never quit, so I nailed this trip!
This marks 37 US State Highpoints completed!
Arkansas Observations:
- Saw two Cardinals, male and female! the first I’ve seen in decades!
- actual mountains!
- Ouachita Mountains the Ozark National Forest are gorgeous
- Dry counties!
- Real thunderstorms!
- In the southern half of the state, there was nothing but muddy, stagnant bogs, whereas about mid-state real rocky creeks started appearing
- Zero Trump flags seen and only *two* rebel flags, and one was in someone’s back yard

Wild that it’s the highest point between the CAN/MN border and the gulf!
