Hoye Crest, Backbone Mountain, MD, US Highpoint #15, 8 March 2004

Hoye Crest on Backbone Mountain, Maryland lies at 3,360 feet MSL and is ranked #32 in elevation among US Highpoints. This would be my 12th highpoint of 2004, and the third of the day after Ebright Azimuth DE and Mount Davis PA. This was the start of an epic week of highpointing my way down the Appalachins, and I got to Hoye Crest right as the sun was going down.

I hiked up some roads on the west side, that I believe were a future housing subdivision. Once on Backbone, I shuttled along the ridge to the highpoint, and sadly this is so far the only one that I don’t have a selfie of – it was dark, snowing, and I was in a hurry.

Hoye Crest of Backbone Mountain is another of the sad states where the feature rises higher in adjacent states, along with CT, NV, and OK.

Look at that view!
I think that’s the state line marker in the background
The WV state line marker along Backbone Mountain
Hoye Crest of Backbone Mountain is just a few steps away from the state line (WV to the left), where Backbone continues to over 3,600 feet to the southwest.

From here I would drive directly to Spruce Knob West Virginia and sleep in the car.
